Angeles City exchanges 38,717 kilos of plastic to rice in 23 barangays

ANGELES CITY – The city government here collected a total of 38,717 kilos of plastic from 23 barangays as part of its “Walang Plastikan–Plastik Palit-Bigas” project.

“Maraming salamat po sa ating mga kababayan sa efforts na makilahok po sa proyekto nating ito,” Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin, Jr., who launched the project last January, said.

The plastics collected were exchanged for 38,717 kilos of rice by residents who participated in the project.

“While we aim to reinforce waste segregation and reduce the use of plastic, we are also offering a little reward for their effort — rice. Helping our kababayans to put food on the table,” Lazatin furthered.

Two trucks are deployed in barangays via schedule, with the supervision of Chief Adviser IC Calaguas and Executive Assistant IV Reina Manuel, Angeles City Economic Development and Investment Promotions Office Head Irish Bonus-Llego said.

City Engineer Donato Dizon meanwhile explained that the collected plastics will be sold to cement companies. The earnings will be then be turned over to the City Treasurer’s Office.

Of the 23 barangays visited for the project, Barangay Anunas has the highest number of plastic-to-rice exchange — 6,991 kilos; second is Malabanias with 4,404; Pampang (3,701); Sta. Teresita (3,401); and Cuayan (2,400).

The sixth to the highest is Amsic (2,219); seventh is Capaya (1,721); eighth is Pulungbulu (1,576); ninth is Ninoy Aquino (1,474); and tenth is Sto. Rosario (1,372).

The other barangays are Sta. Trinidad (1,317); Lourdes North West (1,190); Tabun (1,047); Lourdes Sur (995); and Lourdes Sur East (950).

The Plastik Palit-Bigas project already went to San Jose with 911 kilos of plastic exchanged to rice; San Nicolas (724); Agapito Del Rosario (632); Claro M. Recto (605); Virgen Delos Remedios (332); Sto. Cristo (282); Salapungan (275); and Mining (198).

The redemption trucks were deployed at Sapangbato from March 9 to 10, 2022.
