MABALACAT CITY — A research paper on the Balakat Tree, titled “The Balakat Tree Project: A Case Study on Higher Education Institutions’ Role in Climate Change Mitigation and Environmental Sustainability”, has been accepted by the American Journal of Environment and Climate, an internationally indexed research publication.
The paper, co-authored by Mabalacat City College President Michelle Aguilar-Ong and James Darwin Lagman, Director of the Center for Community Research and Innovation, examines the ecological significance of the Balakat Tree and showcases how higher education institutions can contribute to climate change mitigation through local initiatives and community collaboration.
The study emphasizes the importance of community-based environmental programs, with the culturally significant Balakat Tree at the center, to enhance biodiversity and promote climate resilience.
By merging academic research with community extension efforts, the paper outlines how higher education institutions (HEIs) can actively address climate challenges through education, research, and local partnerships. This study serves as a model for integrating research and education with climate action, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
