Converge fiber powers young scientists’ annual summer camp

PSYSC gathers more than 500 students annually from around the country to underline the importance of science, technology, and the environment to secondary school students.

Leading fiber broadband and technology company Converge ICT Solutions Inc. powered up this year’s National Youth Science, Technology and Environment Summer Camp organized by the Philippine Society of Youth Science Clubs, Inc. (PSYSC) with the support of the Department of Science and Technology (DoST) with lightning-fast connectivity for the four-day event held in Batangas.

Converge also awarded a BIDA Fiber Internet Scholarship to a female camper who came from Batac, Ilocos Norte. The internet scholar will enjoy free fiber connectivity for her two years of senior high school.

According to Xyril Dan Manuel, Marketing Head of the PSYSC, the summer camp aims to immerse students in science, technology, and environment in a fun and interactive way. This year, the camp was attended by more than 570 students nationwide, coming from 23 schools.

“We have delegates from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. But, this year, most of our attendees are students from Mindanao,” Manuel said.

“By mounting events like the summer camp, we are able to push for the organization’s objective which is to promote science clubs all over the country and to foster public understanding of science, technology, and environment,” he noted.

Converge VP and Head of Corporate Communications and Public Relations Jay-Anne Encarnado applauded PSYSC for organizing the annual event that seeks to nurture aspiring scientists and innovators in the country and advocates for technologies that promote environmental preservation.

“As a technology company, Converge has been an active supporter of initiatives that not only celebrates excellence in science and technology but also champions sustainable practices. Through these initiatives, we hope to see more students, especially young women, to go into the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics track and encourage them to pursue a career in the ICT field in the future,” she said.

The theme for this year’s summer camp is “Ravisinthe: Activating Electric Potential Beneath the Sands” where organizers took the students on a virtual journey through the desert to unlock various mysteries of the earth and how it powers technology, innovation, and progress.

The PSYSC is a nationwide organization committed to promote the public understanding of science, technology, and the environment. For more than 52 years, PSYSC has conducted impactful activities and programs tailored towards elementary and high school students.

Converge has had a long-standing partnership with the DOST, inking a collaboration with the latter’s Science and Technology Information Institute, together with the Pacific Kabelnet (PKN) Group, to make DoST programs widely accessible via the Vision Xperience Box, the entertainment set-top box product.

At the height of the pandemic, to broaden its support to science, technology, and engineering scholars of the Philippine Science High School, Converge provided free connectivity to the latter’s ‘learning hubs’ nationwide.

These activities that impact non-ICT groups and agencies form part of the company’s sustainability strategy, which in turn is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
