Challenges and victories in saving Manila Bay

November 17 was a historic day for the Manila Bay Rehabilitation Program as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-PENRO Pampanga Manila Bay Unit launched its very first Photo Exhibit held at SM City Pampanga.

This is exhibit showcases PENRO Pampanga’s activities of the Manila Bay Rehabilitation Program and serves as an Information, Education and Communication (IEC) Campaign for mallgoers as restrictions are eased.

Gracing the event were no less than the Undersecretary for Field Operations and Environment, USEC Atty. Juan Miguel Cuna, and Undersecretary for Solid Waste Management and Local Government Units Concerns USEC Benny Antiporda.

Also supporting the event was Regional Executive Director of DENR Region III, Engr. Paquito T. Moreno, Jr.

All the guests affirmed their full support to the Manila Bay Rehabilitation Project.

Battles have their own challenges and the Manila Bay Rehabilitation Program of the DENR is no exemption – from unmanaged wastes disposal, violators and even the carelessness of people resulting in the deterioration of our river systems.

Every single day the DENR battles against waste pollution, a grueling battle that seems to be never-ending.

But giving-up is never an option for the Manila Bay Unit headed by Noel Mariñas and his staff together with the Estero Rangers facing these hardships in hopes of a better future for our environment.

More than 19,000 sacks of wastes have been collected as of this writing and more than 130 kilometers of waterways have been cleaned.

Trashtraps set on the rivers of Pampanga and the grubbing activities of the MB Unit also contributed to the collection of wastes with more than 2200 cu.m. collected.

Head of PENRO Pampanga Laudemir Salac said the program of the Manila Bay Rehabilitation will not slow down and will continue moving forward until the quality of the rivers of Pampanga are restored.

Success is still an ongoing process, but the small progress and victories along the way are still worth the celebration.

We would also like to give our appreciation to the Management of SM City Pampanga — SM Supermalls Regional Operations Manager Andrea Madlangbayan, SM City Pampanga Mall Manager Aaron Montenegro and SM Corporate Environmental Compliance Senior Manager, for the support in this event.
