CAMILING, Tarlac — The Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) has partnered with the Philippine Seed Industry Association (PSIA) to host a Vegetable Derby, an initiative designed to bring high-yield crop varieties and technical expertise directly to local farmers and TAU students.
PSIA Administrative Assistant Hazel Joy Cariaga emphasized that the derby showcased high-technology seeds specifically designed to help increase production and farmer income.
Cariaga noted that the partnership also served as an educational platform for TAU students, preparing them for the evolving demands of the agriculture industry.
During the event’s convocation program, Agriculture Assistant Secretary for Ruminant Livestock Benjamin Albarece commended the university’s leadership in modern farming.
”This year’s celebration, with its spotlight on smart agriculture, reflects the university’s commitment to embracing innovation, technological advancement, and sustainable practices in farming,” he stated.
The event featured a variety of crops cultivated by participating companies, such as squash, string beans, bitter gourd, chili, and eggplant for the open field.
Meanwhile, the university’s greenhouse facilities housed premium crops, including honeydew, cantaloupe, cherry tomatoes, and cucumbers.
TAU Sustainable Mechanized Agriculture for Research and Technology Agriculture Center Manager Amy Lizbeth Rico highlighted that the program seeks to establish direct connections between farmers and seed companies.
She emphasized that through the event, farmers gained access to expert technicians from each company who provided technical guidance and consultation.
The initiative culminated in a Harvest Festival, where the public was invited to pick and pay for fresh produce directly from the trial plots.
Visitors are welcome to experience the harvest first hand, with the site remaining open to the community while supplies last.
