CAMP OLIVAS – As the holiday season draws near, PRO3 director Brig. Gen. Matthew Baccay called on the public to be cautious of scammers who use the name of prominent personalities including politicians and other high-ranking government officials to hitch money.
Baccay issued the reminder after the arrest of two women who allegedly asked for cash using his name.
Baccay identified the two suspects as Editha Candelaria, 47, of Cinko Cinko, Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija; and Maribeth Cabanding, 41, of Sto. Domingo, Angeles City; while their cohort Allan Castillano, of Kapitan Pepe Subd., Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija eluded arrest.
They were nabbed by members of the Mexico police led by acting police chief Lt. Col. Grace Naparato and RID-Special Concern Unit 3.
According to Baccay, the three suspects introduced themselves as his representatives to solicit money from Adonis Salas, 65, barangay chairman of San Antonio, Mexico amounting to P9,000 for a “Dinner for a Cause” set on December 10 at the Hotel Stotsenberg, Clark, Mabalacat City, in Pampanga.
“Let me remind the public to be discerning and do not easily trust anyone who will use the name of several personalities, including myself, to ask for a favor or money. I already ordered all police units to be on the watch to prevent unscrupulous individuals from deceiving our people of their hard-earned money. I also urge everyone to immediately report to authorities if they fall victim to any scam,” Baccay said.
