NEW CLARK CITY, Tarlac — Science and Technology Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. emphasizes the importance of establishing the Virology and Vaccine Institute of the Philippines (VIP) in New Clark City, which is currently in its second phase of construction.
The VIP, considered one of the administration’s legacy projects, is a partnership between the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) aimed at strengthening the country’s preparedness against viral threats.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the world the urgent need to study viruses that can originate from animals, plants, and humans, affecting vast regions and even the global population. We also need to study viruses that threaten our food security, such as the African Swine Fever, which is a more immediate concern. I am hopeful that, with our continued efforts, we can operationalize this new facility in New Clark City very soon,” Solidum said.

Recently, the secretary was joined by officials from DOST, BCDA, and the Department of Public Works and Highways in visiting the site to check on the progress of works.
They were welcomed by BCDA President and CEO Joshua Bingcang, who provided updates on the project’s construction status.
The institute marks a strategic move in boosting the country’s capabilities in scientific research and public health, ensuring national resilience against present and future viral challenges.
