DOST II benchmarks Pampanga State U’s hydram project

In a move to exemplify the role of science and technology in addressing development challenges, the Department of Science and Technology – Regional Office II (DOST II) visited Pampanga State University (Pampanga State U) to explore its Hydraulic Ram (Hydram) Pump Project during a benchlearning event held at the University’s Multipurpose Hall recently.

The visit was part of DOST II’s ongoing efforts to learn best practices in implementing the Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) Program in Region III.

The Hydraulic Ram (Hydram) Pump Project, implemented through Pampanga State University’s Extension Services Office (ESO), was showcased as a model site for its effective delivery of sustainable water solutions to geographically disadvantaged communities.

Led by Engr. Inla Diana Salonga, project leader, Pampanga State U’s Hydram Project began in 2021 under Program AQUA (Accessible, Quality, and Unified Approach to Water Access) and was presented under the Community Empowerment category of the CEST Program.

In her presentation to DOST II, Engr. Salonga detailed the project’s development journey from needs assessment and technical design to community engagement and on-ground implementation.

“They were amazed at how we were able to sustain the project and expand it to more sites. They’re planning to invite the University later on so we can visit their sites,” said Engr. Salonga.

“We also encouraged DOST II to partner with other state universities, thereby forming a tripartite collaboration for future engagements. Pampanga State U will provide technical assistance to the partner state university that will implement the project,” she added.

Also present during the event were Engr. Rhoderick M. Favorito, Director of the Extension Services Office (ESO), along with ESO center managers.

The DOST II delegation was led by Daisy D. Simon, Senior Science Research Specialist; Rowena A. Guzman, Science Research Specialist II; and Angelo V. Capurian, Project Technical Assistant I. The visit was coordinated with representatives from DOST Region III, including Jett T. Feliciano, Project Assistant II; Rizaline Santos, Science Research Specialist II; Shiela Chrismil Lacson, Project Technical Assistant; and other regional staff.

The benchmarking activity is expected to spark future collaborations, promoting scalable and sustainable solutions for water access in underserved communities across the country.
