Mutya Ning Angeles 2022 bets to use locally-produced beads for accessories

ANGELES CITY — Beads harvested by the Aeta community from Barangay Sapangbato here will be made into the official accessories of the 20 candidates of the Mutya Ning Angeles (MNA) 2022.

This is part of the project of Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin, Jr. to help the Aeta community, according to Executive Assistant IV Reina Manuel, one of the heads of the MNA 2022 working committee.

Manuel said the beads will be designed by Frederick Policarpio, one of the renowned local artists and designers in the city.

According to Chief Adviser IC Calaguas, also supervising the working committee, Mayor Lazatin wants the MNA 2022 to not just celebrate resiliency, beauty, and wit, but also to promote what Angeles City can offer in terms of creativity, in line with its established branding #AngeleñoPa (Angeleño First).

The beads were turned over to Manuel and Calaguas on Sept. 3, 2022, during the official screening and selection of MNA candidates.

Also present during the turnover were Policarpio, Angeles City Tourism Officer-in-Charge Anneleen Antonio-Sugui, Angeles City Economic Development Investment and Promotions Head Irish Bonus-Llego, Rosette Ramos-Biag, Marlon Tuazon, Poklong Guina, and Gerome Esguerra.

The MNA 2022, set on Dec. 8, is one of the activities lined up for the Fiestang Kuliat 2022: Kapagmasusian king Kuliat, Tapang at Tetagan da reng Angeleños. It will be co-presented by the Beautéderm Corporation led by President and Chief Executive Officer Rei Anicoche-Tan, after two years of hiatus due to the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the 20 official candidates were chosen by the MNA screening committee composed of renowned designers and stylists Rosette Ramos-Biag, Frederick Policarpio, and Marlon Tuazon.

“There were 27 applicants who attended the screening today. And all of them were very impressive. Out of the 27, the committee has chosen 20 official candidates,” Manuel said. “In fact, we also accepted walk-in applicants earlier, as long as they were qualified and had their requirements.”

According to Antonio-Sugui, the  candidates were from barangays Amsic, Anunas, Balibago, Capaya, Cutcut, Lourdes Sur, Mining, Ninoy Aquino, Pandan, Lourdes Northwest, San Jose, Sapangbato, Sta. Teresita, Sto. Cristo, Claro M. Recto, Sapalibutad, and Pulung Cacutud.

“We would also like to thank the Prime City Hotel and Giada’s Cafe for hosting us today. They are among the sponsors of MNA 2022,” Antonio-Sugui shared.
